Vat Savitri Vrat is an important Hindu festival observed by married women. It is celebrated with devotion for the long life and well-being of their husbands. This vrat (fast) is observed on the Amavasya (new moon day) of the Jyeshtha month according to the Hindu lunar calendar.

The first Vat Savitri Vrat was observed by Savitri, the daughter of King Ashwapati, for her husband Satyavan. She brought him back to life through her deep devotion and courage. Since then, married women observe this vrat to pray for the health, longevity, and prosperity of their husbands.

Let’s understand when the vrat will be observed in 2025, its significance, and how to perform the rituals.

When is Vat Savitri Vrat in 2025?

According to the Hindu Panchang (calendar), the Jyeshtha Amavasya tithi (new moon day) for Vat Savitri Vrat 2025 will begin on Monday, 26 May at 12:11 PM and end on Tuesday, 27 May at 8:31 AM. Therefore, as per tradition and astrological calculations, Monday, 26 May 2025, is considered the most auspicious day to observe the vrat.

Even the Diwakar Panchang confirms that Vat Savitri Vrat will be observed on 26 May 2025.

Vat Savitri Puja Muhurat (Auspicious Timings) for 2025

  • Brahma Muhurat: From 4:03 AM to 4:44 AM – This time is ideal for meditation, chanting, and spiritual practices.

  • Abhijit Muhurat: From 11:51 AM to 12:46 PM – Considered one of the most auspicious timings to begin any significant activity or puja.

  • Amrit Muhurat (Most Auspicious Period): From 5:25 AM to 7:08 AM – Highly favorable for performing the main vrat rituals and prayers.

  • Shubh Muhurat (Favorable Period): From 8:52 AM to 10:35 AM – Suitable for puja, fasting rituals, and offerings

  • Labh Muhurat (Profitable Period): From 3:45 PM to 5:28 PM – Considered good for activities related to success and growth.

Performing the vrat, offering prayers, and worshipping the Vat (banyan) tree during these muhurats is believed to bring immense spiritual merit and fulfillment of wishes.

Special Astrological Combinations on Vat Savitri Vrat 2025

A rare and highly auspicious combination of planetary alignments enhances the significance of this year’s Vat Savitri Vrat:

  • Shobhana Yoga: This auspicious yoga will remain in effect until 7:02 AM on 26 May. Following this, Atiganda Yoga will begin and last until 2:55 AM on 27 May. After this, Sukarma Yoga will commence.

  • Bharani Nakshatra: This favorable nakshatra will be active until 8:23 AM on 26 May. After that, Krittika Nakshatra will take over.

Because the vrat is taking place under the influence of Shobhana Yoga and Bharani Nakshatra, it is considered especially beneficial and spiritually powerful this year. Observing the Vat Savitri Vrat during these auspicious periods is said to multiply the vrat’s blessings, bringing longevity, prosperity, and marital happiness.

Vat Savitri Vrat Puja Rituals

Here are the steps followed during Vat Savitri Vrat:

  • Women wake up early, take a bath, and take blessings from their elders, especially their in-laws.

  • They wear red traditional clothes and perform solah shringar (sixteen adornments), which holds special importance on this day.

  • A simple sattvik meal is prepared and kept aside (though the fasting woman does not eat).

  • The worship starts under the Vat (banyan) tree, invoking the Panch Devtas (five deities) and Lord Vishnu.

  • With three strands of kusha grass and sesame seeds, women chant the mantra:
"Om Namo Brahmana Sah Savitri Ihagaccha Iha Tishtha Supratisthitah Bhava",
inviting Lord Brahma and Goddess Savitri.

  • Women offer water, rice grains, vermilion (sindoor), sesame seeds, flowers, garlands, betel leaves, etc., to the tree and deities.

  • A mango is placed at the root of the banyan tree, and water is poured over the tree through it. This mango is later given as prasad to the husband.

  • A raw cotton thread (kacha soot) is used to tie around the tree. Women wrap it 7 or 21 times, but if one does it 108 times, it is considered the most sacred.

  • The fast is broken by eating black gram (kala chana).
