The Union Cabinet on Tuesday gave its nod to the contentious Triple Talaq ordinance, which makes the practice of instant triple talaq by Muslim men a penal offence.

A bill which seeks to make the practice of the talaq-e- biddat void, is pending in Rajya Sabha. The bill will lapse on June 3 with the dissolution of the present Lok Sabha.

The Cabinet has given its nod to the Triple Talaq ordinance, Finance Minister Arun Jaitley said.

Once signed by President Ram Nath Kovind, the triple talaq ordinance will come into force for the third time in less than one year.

Earlier, the government had gotten the bill on criminalising triple talaq listed in the Rajya Sabha for consideration, giving it the top priority notwithstanding the fact that it may find it difficult to get the bill through.

The Muslim Women (Protection of Rights on Marriage) Bill, 2018 has been listed as the number one item under the head legislative business in the Upper House where the opposition has greater numbers, given the fact that BJP's friendly party, AIADMK, also opposed the legislation.
