Army Opens Fire On Protesters In Kashmir's Shopian District, Two Dead

Two civilians were killed today when security forces allegedly fired on a group of violent protestors in Shopian district of Jammu and Kashmir, police officials said.

The protestors pelted stones on a security force convoy passing through Ganovpora village in Shopian district, they said.

The security forces allegedly fired few rounds to chase away the protestors in which several persons were injured, the officials said.

An army convoy came under unprovoked and intense stone pelting by a group of 100-120 stone pelters which later increased to 200-250 people. Crowd caused extensive damage to 4 army vehicles and tried to set them on fire. Mob tried to lynch an officer & snatch his weapon, news agency ANI reported quoting the Defence PRO.

The army was constrained to open fire in self defence to prevent lynching of the officer and burning of Govt vehicles by mob. Seven army men suffered injuries and extensive damage was caused to eleven vehicles. In the process, 2 civilians succumbed to bullet injuries, he said. 

Two of the injured persons, identified as Javaid Ahmad Bhat and Suhail Javid Lone, succumbed to injuries, they said.

The officials said another youth was rushed to a hospital in Srinagar in a critical condition for specialised treatment.
