Ben Shelton and Frances Tiafoe teed up an enthralling quarter-final tie at the Washington Open.
Shelton, a semi-finalist at the Australian Open earlier this year and now fresh off a run to the last eight at Wimbledon, overcame Gabriel Diallo 6-3 6-2.
Tiafoe, meanwhile, downed last year's runner-up Flavio Cobolli 6-1 6-4.
"I'm excited," Tiafoe said of facing Shelton, whom he beat at the US Open in 2024.
"We're great friends. We played an incredible match at the [US] Open last year, I think that's the best we actually both played. He got me the first couple of times.
"He's a great player, a great friend of mine. Laver Cups, Davis Cups. We talk to each other outside of the game, we hang out outside of the game.
"I love that dude, but obviously there's no friends. We're going to try to cut each other's heads off, and the crowd's going to love it.
"I'm going to love the competition, and I hope to get over the line."
Fellow American and top seed Taylor Fritz is also into the quarters, after he overcame Matteo Arnaldi 6-3 6-4.
Fritz has now reached at least the quarter-finals in four of his last five events. Alejandro Davidovich Fokina is next up for the world number four.
Data Debrief: Tiafoe makes it four straight
Tiafoe has now made it to the quarter-finals in Washington in four successive years. Only Alexander Zverev and the great Andre Agassi had previously achieved that feat.
Thursday's triumph marked his first win over a top-20 opponent in 2025, while it is the first time he has registered back-to-back victories on a hard court since he reached the semi-finals at Flushing Meadows last year.
