Here's All You Need To Know About The New INS Khanderi

Strengthening country's naval fleet, Indian navy unveiled its indigenous submarine INS Khanderi at the Mazagaon Dock shipbuilders limited in Mumbai on Thursday.

Out of the six scorpene class submarines signed by India, INS Khanderi is the  second one after INS Kalvari which was launched in April 2015.  

Here's all you need to know about the new warship:

1) INS Khanderi is capable of executing missions like any other modern submarines i.e anti-surface warfare, anti-submarine warfare, intelligence gathering, mine laying, area surveillance, etc.

2) It has been named after the Island fort of Maratha forces, which played a vital role for them to dominate at sea in the late 17th century.

3) The submarine is capable of launching attacks on the enemy using precision guided weapon.

4) It can launch attacks with torpedoes, as well as tube-launched anti-ship missiles, when it is underwater or on surface. It can also gather intelligence and conduct surveillance.

5) INS Khanderi is designed to operate in all theatres, including the tropics. It is designed in a way that it can be operated in co-ordination with other components of the Navy force.

6) Equipped with the 'air independent propulsion system' technology the diesel-driven scorpene submarine can remain underwater for longer periods.

7)Currently, construction of six Scorpene submarines is underway at Mazagon Dock Shipyard Limited (MDL), under Project 75 with Transfer of Technology from M/s DCNS, France as the collaborator.

8)INS Khnaderi is expected to be commissioned into the Indian Navy in the month of  December this year, as the vessel needs to undergo various tests.
