As the captains lined up like toy figures, Shahrukh gave a speech. The Hockey World Cup opening ceremony in Bhubaneswar could have done without SRK’s childhood connect with the sport, or a tired ‘sattar minute’ dialogue from Chak De India, though most would agree that hockey players are the ‘fiercest artistes’. The ceremony was noted for A.R. Rahman and a replay of his old songs, splendid fireworks and colourful costumes. And yes, Madhuri Dixit. A vision, as always.

They dared to keep him out of the team to blood young talent, but can Indian hockey afford to lose a once-in-a-generation midfielder whose rapier passes and through balls have repeatedly opened up opponents’ defences like a can of soup? Nope, so Sardar Singh, former captain, is back in business, aiming for a top spot at the Asiad. Going by the way the Indian team has performed of late, we are inclined to share his hope.
