The IPL 2024 auction was held in Dubai to determine the fate of some of the leading players in the history of cricket. The auction saw some staggering numbers and an excellent amount of money being pulled out to buy the best players in the world. The winners of the ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup 2023 - Australian Cricket Team saw the most lucrative contracts being thrown at them. In fact, the team’s players got some of the most highly paid contracts that the tournament has ever seen.  

Mitchell Starc is the most expensive player who is coming back to the league after a break of 8 years. He was bought by the Kolkata Knight Riders (KKL) at around $3 million. In this auction, there were very few names that were available for bidding but the sizes of the purses of the owners were pretty big. This paved the way for huge amounts of money being shelled out for some selective names in particular. As the attention was laid on a few names of players, this year’s auction saw bollywood style action in place.

1. Mitchell Starc (Kolkata Knight Riders) - Rs. 24.75 crores 

Mitchell Starc took everyone by surprise when he was bought at 24.75 crores by the Kolkata Knight Riders. After this heroic innings in the ICC Men’s World Cup 2023, all eyes were on Starc’s name when his name came on for bidding. The last time Starc played the IPL in 2016, he was able to take 34 wickets in 27 matches. The KKL franchise owners fought with many other teams to get Starc on their team this season.

2. Pat Cummins (Sunrisers Hyderabad) - Rs. 20.50 crores 

The Australian cricket team’s captain - Pat Cummins is next on the list of the most expensive IPL players of 2024. He is the world cup winning captain who took a lot out of the SH franchise team to get on their list of players. Although Cummins did not participate in the IPL last season, he came back with a bang with his performances in tournaments thereafter.  

3. Daryl Mitchell (Chennai Super Kings) - Rs. 14 crores 

Daryl Mitchell is one of the most loved New Zealand players. His performance in the World Cup caught the attention of the CSK team’s management and they happily shelled out 14 crores to get him on their team. The average score made by Mitchell was 69 runs and a total number was 552 runs.  

4. Harshal Patel (Punjab Kings) - Rs. 11.75 crores 

Although the RCB team released Harshal Patel after his last few performances, the Punjab Kings have faith in him and paid a huge sum of 11.75 crores to bring him on their team. Patel is a Haryana player who also got the Purple Cap in the 2021 IPL. Patel has a number of variations in his pocket and can be an excellent player if allowed to be one.   

5. Alzarri Joseph (Royal Challengers Bangalore) - Rs. 11.5 crores 

The RCB team wishes to increase its bowling performance this season and which is why they have bought Alzarri Joseph. In order to get Joseph on the team, the RCB let go of Josh Hazlewood this season. Joseph was earlier a part of the Gujarat Titans and took 20 wickets in 19 games. His economy rate is also excellent.

6. Spencer Johnson (Gujarat Titans) - Rs. 10 crores   

The Gujarat Titans paid an excellent amount of money to get Spencer Johnson on their team this season. Johnson is a great bowler who has played 20 IPL games in the past and took 17 wickets. His economy rate is good but he has not had a big career until now. His variations are workable with a new and an old ball both. The GT are said to be playing a big gamble on this player.  

7. Sameer Rizvi (Chennai Super Kings) - Rs. 8.4 crores 

The team of Chennai Super Kings has notably surpassed its budgets this season in order to get Sameer Rizvi in their batting order. This UP based player was fought over by other teams as well. It definitely did cost the CSK franchise a good amount of money to get him on their corner. Estimations are that he will definitely prove worthy for the team. Rizvi will be making his debut to the IPL this season but his past performances have made him an excellent gamble.

8. Rilee Rossouw (Punjab Kings) - Rs. 8 crores 

Rilee Rossouw is a South African player who was not sold the first time that he was brought up for auction. But this time Rossouw was surprised to have been bought by the Punjab Kings in this year’s auction to improve their batting line-up. He has an excellent hitter who has proved his worth in the past. In the past 24 twenty20 matches, Rossouw scored 624 runs at an average of 36.78.   

9. Shahrukh Khan (Gujarat Titans) - Rs. 7.4 crores 

Shahrukh Khan has not done justice to the fame that he has acquired in IPL until now. However, he has found a new place in the IPL with Gujarat Titans taking him in as a batter after Hardik Pandya’s departure. Khan is anticipated to improve his performance in the past few matches and might actually add some weightage to the team in this year’s IPL.

10. Rovman Powell (Rajasthan Royals) - Rs. 7.4 crores 

Rovman is the last player on the list of the most expensive players in IPL 2024. He is a West Indies batter who is taken by the Rajasthan Royals. The franchise owners wanted more caliber in their middle order of batsmen and found Powell to be just the right fit for the job. Although Powell does not do well against spinners, he can handle the pace bowlers very well. The team of RR is expected to take the maximum benefit of this factor and give their team some weightage in the matches to come.
