James Gunn, the co-head of DC Studios, and the director of the upcoming film, Superman, starring David Corenswet in the titular role, said that the upcoming superhero film is about an immigrant that came from other places and populated America.
James Gunn on Superman
In an interview with The Times of London, James Gunn said, "Superman is the story of America," and added, "An immigrant that came from other places and populated the country, but for me it is mostly a story that says basic human kindness is a value and is something we have lost."
He also admitted that Superman is about politics. However, he also said that on "another level it’s about morality."
"Do you never kill no matter what — which is what Superman believes — or do you have some balance, as Lois believes? It’s really about their relationship and the way different opinions on basic moral beliefs can tear two people apart," he added.
James Gunn also said that there will be "jerks" who are not kind and will take offence "just because it is about kindness. But screw them".
"Whether viewers embrace the symbolism or push back, Superman is shaping up to be more than just another reboot. It’s a conversation-starter dressed in a cape," he stated further.
James Gunn had earlier told Variety, "The next Superman has to be someone who has all the humanity that Superman has but he’s also an alien. It’s gotta be somebody who has the kindness and the compassion that Superman has and be somebody who you want to give a hug."
Superman, written and directed by James, is all set to arrive in theatres on July 11, 2025. Alongside David Corenswet, the film also stars Nathan Fillion, Edi Gathegi, Rachel Brosnahan, Isabela Merced, Nicholas Hoult, Skyler Gisondo, Sara Sampaio, Terence Rosemore, Anthony Carrigan and María Gabriela de Faría, among others.
