Christopher Nolan's next project is titled The Odyssey, Universal Studios revealed on Monday, December 23, on X. It is an adaptation of ancient Greek poet Homer's epic poem.
The Odyssey will have a stellar ensemble cast including Tom Holland, Zendaya, Robert Pattinson, Matt Damon, Anne Hathaway, Lupita Nyong’o, and Charlize Theron.
The Odyssey is expected to start filming early next year and will hit the theatres on July 17, 2026.
The studio wrote, “Christopher Nolan’s next film The Odyssey is a mythic action epic shot across the world using brand new IMAX film technology. The film brings Homer’s foundational saga to IMAX film screens for the first time and opens in theaters everywhere on July 17, 2026''.
Homer's epic poem The Odyssey, chronicles the story of the King of Ithaca, Odysseus, and his strenuous journey back home after the Trojan War. It deals with themes of loyalty, heroism, and the struggle against divine will.
Nolan's film is not the first adaptation of Odyssey. Earlier, it inspired several films and shows. Italian film Ulysses (1954) was directed by Mario Camerini and starred Kirk Douglas, the 1997 miniseries The Odyssey, starring Armand Assante was directed by Andrei Konchalovsky. The most recent is Uberto Pasolini’s The Return, where Ralph Fiennes played Odysseus. The Coen Brothers’ O Brother, Where Art Thou? (2000), was also inspired by the ancient Greek poem.
Nolan has treated his audiences with some of his best works including The Prestige, Inception, Interstellar and Oppenheimer among others. With The Odyssey, he is all set to deliver yet another masterpiece.
The year 2024 was a great one for Nolan as he earned his first Oscar for Oppenheimer and was recently felicitated with a knighthood by King Charles III for his contribution to the film industry.
