Historic performance by the Indian Para-athletes at the World Para Athletics Championship in Japan has fetched them praise from Prime Minister Narendra Modi who lauded it as "remarkable achievement". (More Sports News)
India bagged an unprecedented 17 medals, including six golds at the just-concluded world championships in Kobe, Japan to produce its best-ever performance at the tournament.
Writing about the "outstanding performance" on social media platform X, Modi praised the hard work of the athletes.
"I am delighted by the outstanding performance of our Indian Para-athletes at the World Para Athletics Championship. Rising from 34th to 6th rank in just seven years, they have delivered their best performance yet at the 2024 Championship, securing an impressive 17 medals!," the PM wrote in a tweet.
India ended at the sixth position in the medals tally at the event, its best ever finish.
India had finished at the 19th spot in the last edition.
"Compliments to our exceptional athletes and everyone working tirelessly behind the scenes for this remarkable achievement. Their dedication and perseverance are truly inspiring, showing the world what determination and hard work can achieve," he added.
India's previous best was 10 medals including three gold that they had won in the 2023 edition of the tournament held in Paris. However, this year, they surpassed it by a big margin.
Simran Sharma (women's 200m T12), Deepthi Jeevanji (women's 400m T20), Sachin Khilari (men's shot put F46), Sumit Antil (men's javelin F64), Thangavelu Mariyappan (men's high jump T63) and Ekta Bhyan (women's club throw F51) were India's six gold medal winners.
