New York Liberty coach Sandy Brondello is hoping that Breanna Stewart's injury sustained against the Los Angeles Sparks is nothing too serious.

Just three minutes into the Liberty's dramatic 101-99 defeat to the Sparks, Stewart exited the game after injuring her lower leg following a transition.

The 30-year-old had three points and a rebound before being forced to depart, with Stewart not returning from the locker room as the Liberty dropped to 17-7 for the season.

The two-time WNBA MVP has averaged 19 points, 6.8 rebounds and four assists in 2025, but looks set for a spell on the sidelines during a crucial part of the campaign.

After spending much of July at home, New York will now play five of their next six matches on the road, but will likely be doing so without Stewart in their ranks.

Brondello was unable to provide an immediate update on Stewart's status going forward or any specifics on the injury itself, saying: "Hopefully she'll be okay."

New York were playing the second half of a back-to-back after beating the Phoenix Mercury on Friday, a game that saw Stewart score a season-low six points.

"I don't want to give an excuse for being fatigued because we did have two days off," Stewart said. "I just gotta get my legs back underneath me.

"I don't know how I will do that with a back-to-back tomorrow, but I'll figure it out."

The Sparks had stretched their lead to as many as 15 points, though New York were able to tie the scoreboard several times in the fourth quarter.

But Los Angeles, led by Rickea Jackson, who scored a team-high 24 points, including a game-winning layup at the buzzer, extended their winning run to five games.

"We worked really hard for this win," Jackson said. "I didn't personally want to go to overtime.

"I'm like, 'We can get this out the way. End this road trip right now. I'm willing to do whatever that takes.'"

Dearica Hamby and Azura Stevens also played their part for the Sparks, both registering 17-point double-doubles, the latter notching her seventh such score of the season.

"We bent, and we bent, but we didn't break," Sparks coach Lynne Roberts said.

"We just kept coming back, and for me as a coach, I love the confidence that our players are playing with."
