Summary of this article

  • Chahal continues dominance over Gill and controls middle overs effectively

  • Iyer suffers wrist injury scare raising concern for Punjab Kings

  • Prasidh Krishna’s impact spell of 3/29 triggers collapse and shifts momentum

Punjab Kings began their Indian Premier League (IPL) 2026 campaign with a tense but crucial three-wicket win over Gujarat Titans in Mullanpur, chasing down 163 in 19.1 overs to continue the early-season trend of successful run chases.

What looked like a comfortable pursuit at one stage quickly turned into a nervy finish, with the game swinging dramatically in the middle overs before being sealed in the final phase.

The contest had multiple layers. Gujarat Titans put up a competitive total but never fully capitalised after solid starts from their top order. Punjab, in response, built a strong platform before suffering a sudden collapse that brought GT right back into the match. However, a composed finishing effort ensured the chase stayed on track.

Beyond the result, the match delivered key talking points, a standout debut performance, a crucial bowling spell that changed momentum, a worrying injury scare, and significant individual milestones, making it one of the most eventful games of the opening week.

The Australian all-rounder scored an unbeaten 72 off 44 balls, anchoring the chase and finishing the game under pressure. His innings came at a strike rate above 160 and included a mix of controlled aggression and smart strike rotation.

Connolly walked in early and stitched a crucial partnership to stabilize the innings before taking responsibility during the collapse. Even as wickets fell around him, he remained composed, ensuring Punjab didn’t lose control of the chase.

This knock also placed him in elite company, becoming the 25th player in IPL history to score a 50+ on debut, underlining the significance of his performance.

Vyshak and Rabada mark key milestones

Punjab’s bowling unit laid the foundation for the win, with Vijaykumar Vyshak leading the charge.

His figures of 3/34 not only helped restrict Gujarat to 162/6 but also ranked as the third-best bowling performance for PBKS against GT.

Vyshak’s ability to break partnerships at crucial moments ensured Gujarat never reached a match-winning total.

Meanwhile, Kagiso Rabada quietly achieved a major career milestone, completing 300 wickets in T20 cricket during the match. This highlights his consistency across leagues and formats, even on a day where he wasn’t the standout performer.

Punjab’s control in the first innings was built around their spinners, and Yuzvendra Chahal once again proved why he remains one of the most reliable wicket-takers in T20 cricket and of course, the highest wicket-taker in the IPL history.

Chahal dismissed Gujarat Titans captain Shubman Gill, continuing his strong record against him in the IPL by getting his wicket for the fourth time in the tournament's history. While Gill managed to top-score with 39, he never looked fully settled against Chahal’s variations.

Chahal’s spell of 2/28 played a key role in restricting GT’s momentum during the middle overs. His ability to control the scoring rate while picking up crucial wickets meant Gujarat never fully capitalised on their platform.

Shreyas Iyer injury scare adds concern

Despite the win, Punjab Kings will be concerned about their captain Shreyas Iyer.

The injury occurred during the chase in a freak moment when a powerful shot from debutant Cooper Connolly struck him at the non-striker’s end. While Iyer continued to bat briefly, he was clearly in discomfort, and the incident disrupted Punjab’s rhythm during a crucial phase of the innings.

Though there is no confirmed severity yet, the nature of the blow, particularly around the wrist area, raises concern given Iyer’s past injury history.

For Punjab, this could become a key storyline moving forward. A settled captain is critical in a long IPL season, and any fitness issue could impact both team balance and leadership decisions.

In a match filled with positives, this was the one negative takeaway for the Kings.

Prasidh Krishna’s impact spell turns the game

If there was one phase where Gujarat Titans clawed their way back into the contest, it was through Prasidh Krishna.

Introduced as an impact substitute, Krishna delivered a superb spell, finishing with 3/29 in four overs.

His burst of wickets triggered a dramatic collapse, with Punjab slipping from 110/2 to 118/6, suddenly turning a comfortable chase into a tense finish.

Krishna’s ability to hit hard lengths and extract bounce made scoring difficult, especially against new batters. His spell not only brought Gujarat back into the game but also showed the importance of the Impact Player rule in T20 cricket.

Even GT captain Shubman Gill later admitted that Krishna could have been introduced earlier, acknowledging the impact he had on the game.

" I could've (on delaying Prasidh's introduction), but he came at the right time, took wickets and kept us in the game until the 17th and 18th over. All ifs and buts, but at that time, we thought, you know, with the wicket going a little bit slow, maybe a bowler who's quick and skinny might get us a few wickets," Gill said in the post-match presentation.

In the end, while the result didn’t go Gujarat’s way, Krishna’s performance stood out as a major positive.
