A year after the spine-chilling Shraddha Walkar murder case in national capital—Delhi, the victim’s family has said there has been no update on the case from police and court.

In November last year, the murder of Shradhha Walkar — executed months earlier in May allegedly by her live-in partner Aaftab Poonawala — and the manner in which her body was disposed of made headlines.

A year on, Walkar’s family in Mumbai say they have received no updates from the court or police for months now, IE reported.

Walkar, 27, was allegedly murdered by Poonawala (28) inside their home in Chattarpur between May 18 and 20. The incident came to light in November, since nobody had earlier reported that she was missing.

Police said Poonawala had chopped Walkar’s body with a saw and knives, and disposed of the pieces – more than 20 of them – at different locations over the next several weeks.

It was in October 2022 that Walkar’s father Vikas lodged a missing persons report when he couldn’t reach his daughter on phone. Police had said the father-daughter had not been talking much since Vikas disapproved of her relationship with Poonawala.

The report quoting Vikas said he is yet to perform Walkar’s last rites or any other puja to remember her.

“I tried a lot to get her remains but the police gave us nothing…It looks like the case has gone cold…All the proof points towards him (Poonawala),” he was quoted as having said.

He added he had a “sweet and ambitious daughter who was killed by an abusive man”, the report mentioned.

In the last two to three months, Vikas alleged, he has not received a call from the police or courts about any development in the case.

“My daughter and I didn’t talk a lot. I regret that now…I keep thinking about the case but don’t know what to do. I haven’t been to Delhi in months…” he said, the report mentioned.

A senior police officer said the probe was complete and all evidence chargesheeted, the report mentioned.

“The court is recording statements now… We have all the necessary evidence,” the report quoted an official as having said.

A Delhi court framed murder charges against Poonawala earlier this year.
