Vijay Raaz starrer Udaipur Files (earlier titled Gyanvapi Files: A Tailor's Murder Story), which has been delayed due to censor and legal issues, will finally see the day of light. Based on tailor Kanhaiya Lal murder case, the film is jointly directed by Bharat S. Shrinate and Jayant Sinha. It was supposed to release on July 11. Shrinate on Friday told NDTV that the film will be released in theatres on August 8, 2025. This comes after Supreme Court directed the Delhi High Court to hear the pleas challenging Centre's nod to release the film.

As per reports, the Court requested the High Court to hear the matter on Monday (July 28).

Shrinate told NDTV, "We respect the Supreme Court's order and are ready to release the film on August 8. Jani Firefox Films is going to start promotions and release Udaipur Files worldwide on August 8. Truth always wins." He had earlier told the portal that the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC) has made 150 cuts to Udaipur Files.

Islamic clerics’ body Jamiat Ulema-i-Hind President Maulana Arshad Madani and Mohammed Javed (one of the accused in the Kanhaiya Lal murder case) are objecting to the film's release.

A bench of Justices Surya Kant and Joymalya Bagchi said the filmmakers appeal against the Delhi High Court order staying the release was infructuous as they accepted the July 21 order of the Centre clearing the release of the film subject to six cuts in its scenes and modifications in the disclaimer, reported PTI.

The bench said it has not expressed any opinion on the merits of the matter and and the high court can resolve the issue of stay of release of film.

Tailor Kanhaiya Lal, who hailed from Udaipur, Rajasthan, was murdered at his shop in Hathipole area on June 28, 2022. He was allegedly killed by Muhammad Riyaz Attari and Muhammad Ghaus.

They later released a video claiming the murder was to take revenge against Kanhaiya Lal for allegedly sharing a social media post in support of former Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader Nupur Sharma after her controversial comments against Prophet Mohammed.

The case was investigated by National Investigation Agency (NIA) and the accused were booked under the Unlawful Activities Prevention Act, besides provisions under IPC.

The trial is pending before the special NIA court in Jaipur.
