Rajkummar Rao starrer Maalik hit the theatres on Friday, July 11. The film sees Rao in a never-seen-before avatar- a gangster who builds his own empire and rises to power in the underworld. The action thriller, directed by Pulkit, received mixed reviews from critics and audiences alike. However, Rajkummar has been lauded for his stellar act. The gangster drama had a slow start at the box office, as it earned in single digit.

As per a report in Sacnilk, Maalik collected an estimated Rs 3.35 crore at the box office on the first day of its release.

It had an overall 12.86% Hindi Occupancy on Friday. Night shows recorded the highest occupancy of 21.88%, and morning shows witnessed the lowest occupancy of just 6.65%. Afternoon and evening shows had footfall of 11.12%, and 11.78%, respectively.

Maalik failed to beat the opening collection of Rao's previous film, Bhool Chuk Maaf, which reportedly earned Rs 7 crore on its first day. But it has performed well than Vikrant Massey and Shanaya Kapoor’s Aankhon Ki Gustaakhiyan, which opened at only Rs 32 lakh.

Apart from Rajkummar Rao, Maalik also starred Manushi Chhillar, Saurabh Shukla, Prosenjit Chatterjee, Huma Qureshi, Swanand Kirkire and Anshumaan Pushkar, in pivotal roles. It has been produced by Tips Industries Limited and Northern Lights Films. Sachin-Jigar composed the soundtrack, with lyrics penned by Amitabh Bhattacharya. Ketan Sodha has composed the background score.

Maalik is deemed as 'dated' and 'dull' by the netizens, but many raved Rajkummar's powerpacked performance. His menacing expression, and fiery portrayal, have got thumbs up from the audiences and critics. They were all praise for the first half, but was disappointed with the second half especially with the screenplay, which they felt was weaker.

Maalik will face a tough competition with James Gunn's Superman in India, which collected more than Rao's film on day 1.
