Emraan Hashmi is returning as Shivam in the sequel to his 2007 romantic thriller Awarapan. The film was announced last year with a promo video on the actor's 46th birthday. Directed by Nitin Kakkar and produced by Vishesh Films, Awarapan 2 will arrive in cinemas on April 3, 2026. In an interview, Emraan opened up about the nearly 20-year delay of Awarapan 2.

On the long gap between the two films, Emraan told Man’s World India that he was holding back until he came across the right script. "I was holding off for the longest because a sequel has to be worthy of the first film. I was waiting for a strong script," he said.

Everything was sorted when writer Bilal Siddiqi came on board with a gripping subject, and once they read it, they decided to go ahead.

In another interview with SCREEN, Hashmi clarified that he is not doing Awarapan 2 for nostalgia. "This film was being planned for the past seven years. We just happened to stumble upon a script. We were holding off a sequel, but when we read a script which was taking Shivam’s journey ahead, we got to it. It’s not cashing in," he added.

The anticipation for Awarapan 2 peaked when leaked images and videos from the Rajasthan sets went viral on social media last year. The visuals showed Hashmi sporting long hair.

About Awarapan

Awarapan was inspired by the South Korean movie A Bittersweet Life and was produced by Mukesh Bhatt. It also starred Shriya Saran, Mrinalini Sharma, and Ashutosh Rana. Though the film didn't perform well at the box office, the songs were chartbusters, and Hashmi garnered immense love and praise for his performance.

Emraan's Taskaree: The Smugglers Web has been released on Netflix today. The crime thriller is created by Neeraj Pandey and directed by Raghav Jairath.
