Shoaib Bashir was England's man of the hour as he claimed the decisive wicket that sealed a dramatic 22-run victory over India in the third Test at Lord's.

Ravindra Jadeja's unbeaten 61 set up a blockbuster finish on Monday, but England were able to bowl India out for 170 to take a 2-1 lead in the five-match series.

India started the day needing 135 runs for victory with six wickets in hand, with Washington Sundar having boldly predicted the match would be over shortly after lunch.

However, the tourists got off to a slow start when Rishabh Pant (nine) fell inside the third over to the returning Jofra Archer.

Things got better for England three overs later when Ben Stokes trapped KL Rahul (39) lbw, with the captain offering a constant threat during his nine-over spell in the first session.

Jadeja and Nitish Kumar Reddy attempted to steady the ship for the tourists and did so as they reached 82-7, but England came back hunting for more wickets.

Just before lunch, Chris Woakes was able to prise Nitish out for 13, before Archer took a stunning one-handed catch from his own bowling to dismiss Washington (0), with the latter's wicket leading to jubilant England celebrations.

Heading into the second session, India had a target of 81 runs with just two wickets remaining, with Jasprit Bumrah joining Jadeja at the crease as they looked to respond.

And they did just that, with the pair frustrating England in a partnership that lasted almost 22 overs for just 32 runs, before Bumrah fell to Stokes' bowling for a score of five.

But Jadeja continued to resist, reaching his fourth successive half-century in this Test, with a delayed tea seeing India paused just 30 runs behind with one wicket in hand.

However, Bashir, who suffered a finger injury on day three, came to the rescue, with his stunning delivery seeing Mohammed Siraj (4) defend the ball into the ground and back onto his stumps

Data Debrief: England bide their time

On the sixth anniversary of England's stunning 50-over World Cup triumph at Lord's, it was the two heroes from that day, Stokes and Archer, who rose to the occasion again.

They shared four wickets on the final day, with Stokes the pick of the bowlers in the second innings as he ended with figures of 3-48, helping England seal their fifth-smallest Test victory, in terms of runs, on home soil.

England's margin of victory was their lowest in a men's Test at Lord's, while it was also their tightest triumph since beating Australia by 14 in their Ashes opener in 2013.

But they were made to work for their win. Indeed, Jadeja and Bumrah faced 132 balls in their partnership, the second most by any Indian pairing for the ninth wicket in a men's test away from home (142 by VVS Laxman and Anil Kumble against South Africa in 2001).

The Player of the Match award went to Stokes, who became the third England skipper to claim that honour in a Lord's Test, after Graham Gooch in 1990 and Nasser Hussain in 2002, with all three instances coming against India.
