The drafting of the proposed Uniform Civil Code (UCC) for Uttarakhand has been completed, announced retired Supreme Court Justice Ranjana Prakash Desai, who is also a member of the UCC draft committee for the state. The report of the expert committee along with the draft will be printed and submitted to the Government of Uttarakhand.

The announcement comes days after Prime Minister Narendra Modi's fervent pitch at a BJP event in Bhopal for UCC's implementation. UCC refers to a common set of laws that are applicable to all the citizens of India that is not based on religion and dealing with marriage, divorce, inheritance and adoption among other personal matters.

Two days after Modi's pitch, Uttarakhand Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami said that such a law will be implemented in the state soon. "Uniform Civil Code (UCC) is going to be implemented soon in Uttarakhand, the law will be the same for all!" the chief minister tweeted in Hindi.

The state had set up a committee, headed by former Supreme Court judge Justice Ranjana Prakash Desai, last year to examine ways to implement such a code.

CM Dhami on February 12 last year, during election campaigning, announced that the implementation of UCC will be the first decision the BJP government would take after coming to power. He stated that Article 44 of the Constitution empowers the state governments to implement UCC.
