An old video of Scindia being called “Maharaj” has resurfaced online.
It follows criticism of his exchange with a voter in Guna.
The voter said people would withhold votes unless a road was built.
An old clip of Union Minister Jyotiraditya Scindia being addressed as “Maharaj” during a cricket match has resurfaced online amid criticism of his recent exchange with a voter in Madhya Pradesh’s Guna.
An X user shared the Scindia's interaction with sports anchor during a cricket match and questioned the continued use of the royal title, referring to the abolition of such titles in 1971.
“But these people still think they are Raja Maharajas and we are their slave Praja,” Rai wrote.
The Guna Incident
This came after the a recent video of Scindia speaking to a resident who raised concerns about a road gone viral.
The man told the minister that people would not vote for him if the road was not built. Scindia responded by telling him not to use “this language” while speaking to him.
The exchange prompted criticism on social media. One user wrote: “The monarchy ended, but apparently nobody sent Scindia the memo.” The user added, “Sir, your ancestors were kings. You’re an elected politician. Citizens are voters, not subjects in your kingdom.”
Another user argued that politicians should not act as though they were above the public.
The Congress shared the video on its official X account, calling Scindia’s response an example of the “arrogance of power”. The party alleged that he “flew into a rage” when the resident asked for a road and said, “The public will soon put this arrogance in its place.”
Scindia Inaugurates Projects
Scindia was in Guna on Thursday to inaugurate development projects in the Bamori area as part of events marking Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s birthday. The projects included a ₹5.34 crore degree college building, a ₹1.9-crore bridge on the Guna–Umai–Sirsi road and a ₹3.08-crore power substation at Mudra Hanuman.
At a gathering during the visit, Scindia praised Modi’s record and said India was being viewed differently by the world. He also pointed to the Russian and Chinese presidents’ presence at the BRICS Summit in India, saying countries with differences had agreed to a joint declaration in New Delhi.
