9 Students Die By Suicide In Andhra Pradesh Within Hours Of Inter Exam Results: Report

The Andhra Pradesh Board of Intermediate Examination announced the intermediate results on Wednesday. The students reportedly ended their lives in separate incidents over unhappiness due to failing the exams.

As many as nine students allegedly died by suicide in Andhra Pradesh, while two others attempted suicide in less than 48 hours after the results of Class 11 and 12 exams were declared by the state board this week, media reports said.

The Andhra Pradesh Board of Intermediate Examination announced the intermediate results on Wednesday. More than 10 lakh students appeared for the exam held in March-April. 

According to an IANS report, the students ended their lives in separate incidents after failing the exams. B Tarun, 17, reportedly jumped in front of a running train near Tekkali in Srikakulam district after being unable to clear most of the subject papers. Another 16-year-old girl hanged herself at her residence at Trinadhapuram under Malkapuram police station limits of Visakhapatnam district.

B Jagadeesh, 18, at Kancharapalem locality in Visakhapatnam, ended his life after he failed in one of the subjects in his intermediate second year. Meanwhile, 17-year-old Anusha was depressed over failing one subject in her intermediate first-year exam. She jumped into a lake in Chittoor district. Another student from Chittoor, Babu, reportedly killed himself by consuming pesticides after failing to clear intermediate second year, while T Kiran, 17, was found hanging at his residence in Anakapalli. He was depressed over securing low marks in the intermediate first year.

The pass percentage for first-year intermediate examination was 61, while for second year, it was 72.

The news comes amid a series of student suicide cases being reported from India’s premium institutes like IIT Bombay and IIT Madras. 

Police and psychologists appealed to students to desist from taking the extreme step, saying they have their entire life ahead of them and they can turn a failure into success.
