Zarah Sultana, who has served as the Member of Parliament for Coventry South, has resigned from the United Kingdom’s Labour Party. She has announced that she will co-lead a new Socialist Party along with Jeremy Corbyn, another MP from Islington North.

Sultana, the 31-year-old MP, had been in the Labour Party for almost 14 years. “I will co-lead the founding of a new party, with other Independent MPs, campaigners and activists across the country,” she said in a X post on Thursday, while asking for more people to join their movement.

She has been a staunch critic of Israel since the beginning of the Israel-Palestine conflict. In an earlier post this year, she wrote, ‘I asked the Prime Minister if he still believes Israel is not committing genocide — but he dodged the question.’ In her formal statement of resigning from the party, she has again mentioned ‘the government is an active participant in genocide. And the British people oppose it.’

“In 2029, the choice will be stark: socialism or barbarism,” Zarah said in reference to the upcoming 2029 parliamentary elections of the UK. She was suspended with seven other Labour MPs soon after the 2024 elections, including the former chancellor John McDonnell, for defying the government over its two-child benefit cap.

Four of the rebels have since returned to Labour, but Sultana and McDonnell remain independents.

Asked for a response to her resignation and comments, a Labour Party spokesperson said: "In just 12 months, this Labour government has boosted wages, delivered an extra four million NHS appointments, opened 750 free breakfast clubs, secured three trade deals and four interest rate cuts, lowering mortgage payments for millions.

Only Labour can deliver the change needed to renew Britain," the BBC reported.
