Focus Features’ horror hit Obsession has crossed the $500 million mark worldwide, becoming the first original film of the 2020s to reach the milestone. Directed by Curry Barker, the film has also overtaken Pixar’s Elemental, which finished its global run with $494.6 million.
The achievement adds another milestone to an extraordinary theatrical run for Obsession. The film has also become the highest-grossing festival acquisition ever and the biggest film to date made on a budget of less than $1 million.
Obsession Box Office Crosses $500 Million
Obsession opened in the US with $17.1 million but quickly developed into a major word-of-mouth hit. Its domestic run eventually brought in $263.4 million, with the film repeatedly maintaining or increasing its weekend earnings during its first month in cinemas.
The horror film has also performed strongly overseas, where it has collected $238.1 million. China has contributed $29.7 million while the UK has added $26.7 million. A further $2.5 million from international markets helped push the worldwide total to $501.5 million.
The film still has a South Korean release ahead, meaning its final global total could rise further.
Obsession Surpasses Elemental At Global Box Office
The film’s performance places it ahead of Elemental as the highest-grossing original film released since the pandemic. Its success is particularly notable given its reported budget of under $1 million.
Inde Navarrette has also received attention for her lead performance, with the film helping establish her as a rising star. Navarrette is now set to take on the role of Rogue in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
Meanwhile, ba is already working on his next horror project, Anything but Ghosts. The film will see him star alongside co-writer Cooper Tomlinson, with Bryce Dallas Howard, Aaron Paul and Violet McGraw also attached.
