Former Liverpool mates Mohamed Salah and Sadio Mane set to renew rivalry
Senegal defeated Egypt in the 2021 finale
It is time for the semi-finals of the CAF Africa Cup of Nations 2025-26 in Morocco. Only 4 nations remain alive in the competition out of the 24 that participated in the group stages. Egypt, Senegal, Nigeria and the hosts will be battling it out in the semis for African supremacy.
In one of the semi-finals, 7-time champions Egypt, led by the talismanic Mohammed Salah, will be locking horns with 2021 winners - the Teranga Lions from Senegal who will be banking on the experience of former Liverpool forward Sadio Mane.
How Egypt And Senegal Reached Here?
Egypt, who ended reigning champions Ivory Coast's AFCON 2025-26 campaign, will be looking to claim their first continental title in over 20 years.
The last time they won the African title was way back in 2010, a year before Mohamed Salah made his debut as an Egypt international.
Since then, the Pharaohs missed out on two AFCONs in 2012 and 2015 before finishing as runners-up in 2017 and 2021. The Egyptians had suffered round of 16 exits during the 2019 and 2023 editions.
This time around, they have a real good chance of landing their 8th title. With the likes of Mohamed Salah, Omar Marmoush and Mostafa Mohamed among others present in the team, Egypt secured qualification in the last 4 stages with an unbeaten record.
They won 2 out of the 3 group stage matches against Zimbabwe (2-1) and South Africa (1-0) before concluding the opening round with a goalless draw against minnows Angola.
In the round of 16, the Pharaohs thrashed Benin 3-1 through goals from Marwan Attia, Yasser Ibrahim and Mohamed Salah. Egypt secured their semi-final status with a thrilling 3-2 victory over reigning champions Ivory Coast.
As for Senegal, the Teranga Lions are also entering with a 100% win record. Their group stages began with a 3-0 victory against Botswana and concluded with the same score as well against Benin after a frustrating 1-1 draw against DR Congo.
In the round of 16 and the quarter-finals, the Senegalese unit registered 3-1 and 1-0 victories over Sudan and Mali to seal a meeting with tonight's opponents Egypt, whom they defeated by 4-2 on penalties in the 2021 AFCON final.
