  • Nine New Managers, One Big Question: Which Premier League revolution will work

For years, the Premier League’s biggest stories had familiar faces. Pep Guardiola’s Manchester City set the standard, Arsenal kept chasing the title, and the same managers seemed permanently attached to the same dugouts.

But, not anymore. The 2026-27 season begins with Arsenal as champions, Manchester City learning to live without Guardiola and Rodri, and an extraordinary nine clubs starting with managers appointed since last season. Five of the traditional Big Six have new bosses. In other words, the Premier League has hit the reset button.

So, is this the most significant changing-of-the-guard moment English football has seen in years? There are plenty of reasons to think so.

Arsenal Are No Longer Chasing. Can They Handle Being Chased?

For much of Arteta's Arsenal journey, the motivation was obvious. Catch Manchester City. Close the gap. Get better. Keep believing.

They finally did it. Now comes a challenge Arsenal have not faced in the Premier League era, which is defending the title. In fact, Arsenal have not retained a league championship since the 1930s. Their 2025-26 triumph ended a 22-year drought, but it also changed the psychology around the club overnight.

Arteta has made it clear that simply protecting what Arsenal already have is not the mentality he wants.

“Ultimately, the goal we all know is to win as many major trophies as we possibly can, and what we have to do is make sure that we click the fire every day to players and the staff to behave in that manner. The players need to be the best version, and I feel fresh with a lot of energy and ready to go again. And now it's like building a beast inside you that you want to go through that again, and you know what it's going to take,” Arteta told the BBC.

Building a beast is a revealing choice of words. Arsenal spent years being fuelled by frustration. They knew what they wanted but not what it felt like to get there. Now they do. The danger for every champion is satisfaction; Arteta is trying to turn last season's achievement into an addiction.

The early signs have been encouraging. Arsenal beat Manchester City 3-0 in the Community Shield, with Riccardo Calafiori scoring after just 23 seconds, the fastest goal in the fixture in 58 years. Martin Odegaard also made the club's ambition clear after the win, with Arsenal looking beyond merely retaining the league title.

The question is whether one championship can become the foundation of something bigger.

Manchester City Without Pep Was Always Going To Be Strange. Without Rodri Too?

If Arsenal represent continuity, Manchester City represent the great unknown.

Enzo Maresca has inherited the job nobody wants to get wrong, which is replacing Guardiola at the club he transformed into a domestic superpower.

But Maresca is not simply succeeding a manager. He is taking over during a deeper transition. Rodri has departed, while other major figures have also moved on or face uncertain futures. City's first competitive outing under Maresca ended in a bruising 3-0 defeat to Arsenal in the Community Shield.

Still, Maresca has refused to panic.

“The reason why the players want to leave is because they want to play. It’s very simple. If they don’t play, they want to leave. We are working with the club, with the sporting directors, to see if we can improve the squad. But I am not worried. I am focused on the players we have.”

It sounds calm. The reality around him is anything but. City's task is bigger than finding another defensive midfielder or signing another creative player. Rodri was the rhythm of the Guardiola era. His five Premier League seasons produced 172 appearances, 22 goals and 21 assists, but the numbers alone cannot explain his importance. City controlled matches through him.

Now Maresca must answer a difficult tactical question: do City try to recreate what they were, or become something else entirely? That could be the defining subplot of the entire season.

Nine New Managers And No Time To Experiment

The Premier League has rarely been a patient place. This season may test that reputation more than ever.

City have Maresca. Liverpool have Iraola. Chelsea have Xabi Alonso. Tottenham are beginning under Roberto De Zerbi. Manchester United are trying to build on the momentum created by Michael Carrick.

Five of the traditional Big Six have changed managers. That means several of the biggest clubs in England are effectively conducting major experiments at the same time.

At Liverpool, the scale of change extends beyond the dugout. The departures of Mohamed Salah, Andy Robertson and Ibrahima Konate have left captain Virgil van Dijk facing a new-look defence and a new footballing project.

And Van Dijk has been realistic about the challenge.

“You can train as much as you want, but you need to play games together to get that connection. There are different languages, different ways of communicating and that takes time. But I’m very confident that we can build a very good partnership and a very good defensive unit.”

Liverpool's New Beginning And A Growing Indian Connection

Liverpool's transformation is not limited to the pitch. The club's ownership structure has gained a fresh Indian connection through 1892 Holdings, involving British-Indian businessman Amit Bhatia, giving Indian supporters another reason to follow one of the country's most popular football clubs.

But Iraola's immediate concern is can Liverpool compete while the rebuild is still incomplete?

Speaking before the season opener, the new manager admitted that his squad still required strengthening, particularly in wide areas, but insisted the club could still be competitive while those problems were addressed.

That creates an intriguing contrast. Arsenal begin with stability. Liverpool begin with questions. And at Anfield, those questions will not wait until Christmas.

Can The Heavyweights Afford A Slow Start?

Probably not. The fixture list has ensured that several new projects will be tested almost immediately. Arsenal and Chelsea meet early. Manchester United host Manchester City in the first derby. Liverpool and City are also set for an early heavyweight showdown.

For a new manager, these games can change the entire mood around a project. One victory and supporters start talking about a revolution. Three defeats and suddenly everyone is asking whether the manager understands the club.

Arsenal's advantage is obvious: while rivals are learning new systems and relationships, Arteta's side already know who they are. That makes Arsenal favourites. But being favourites is not the same as being safe.

The Premier League Has Lost Some Familiar Faces. Who Takes Over?

Guardiola is gone. Rodri's City era is over. Salah has left Liverpool. New managers are walking into some of football's biggest jobs.

That creates space. Bukayo Saka could become the face of a champion Arsenal. Odegaard has the chance to captain the club into a genuine dynasty. Erling Haaland may carry even greater responsibility for a City side searching for its new identity.

And somewhere among the expensive new arrivals, emerging stars and tactical experiments, the next defining figure of the Premier League will emerge. That is why 2026-27 feels different.

Arsenal are not asking whether they can catch Manchester City anymore. Manchester City are asking whether they can remain Manchester City without the people who defined their greatest era.
