Bayern opened their Club World Cup campaign with a ruthless 10-0 dismantling of New Zealand Northern League side Auckland City. The Bundesliga 2024-25 winners led 6-0 by half-time, with Bayern managing 31 shots over the 90 minutes and restricting their opponents to a solitary effort in the 80th minute.
The win extended the unbeaten streak of Vincent Kompany’s side to eight games, also marking their fifth clean sheet in six outings. During the same period, Bayern had netted 26 goals.
Despite fielding a heavily rotated team, Bayern secured the biggest win in the tournament so far, with Jamal Musiala returning from injury to score a hat-trick in just 17 minutes. Surprisingly, none of the goals were scored by Harry Kane, who will be itching to get off the mark against Boca Juniors.
The Argentine side, meanwhile, squandered a 2-0 lead against Benfica in their opening fixture, conceding twice and ending the match with ten men after Nicolas Figal’s late red card.
Miguel Merentiel and Rodrigo Battaglia had put Boca in control of the game, but defensive lapses at the end allowed the Portuguese giants back in, with Nicolas Otamendi’s late header securing a 2-2 draw.
Boca entered the Club World Cup sitting second in the Argentine Primera Division’s first phase, and had won six of their last 11 games in all competitions. However, with seven goals conceded in their last seven matches, the South American side will need to be careful against Bayern’s lethal attack.
