India’s thumping 336-run win over England at Edgbaston has not only levelled the Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy series at 1-1 but also given their World Test Championship (WTC) 2025-27 campaign a significant boost.
The Shubman Gill-led side, who came into the game under pressure after a heartbreaking loss at Leeds, produced an all-round performance to outclass England and climb to third place in the WTC points table.
With 12 points from two Tests (50% PCT), India have positioned themselves strongly as the cycle gains momentum.
Hot on India’s heels in the standings are their vanquished opponents. England, despite the heavy defeat, remain in fourth place with the same 12 points and 50% PCT—but marginally behind India on countback.
While the attention was firmly on Birmingham, Australia continued their dominance on the other side of the world. Pat Cummins’ men hammered West Indies by 133 runs in Grenada to clinch the second Test of their three-match series and secure a 2-0 lead.
Australia set the hosts a target of 277, but the Windies crumbled to 143 all out in just 34.3 overs, as Mitchell Starc and Nathan Lyon claimed three wickets apiece.
The win, achieved inside four days at the National Cricket Stadium, cemented Australia’s position at the top of the WTC standings. The 2023 champions have a perfect record so far, with 24 points from two matches (100% PCT). The West Indies, in contrast, remain winless and sit sixth with zero points.
Sri Lanka hold second spot with 16 points (66.67% PCT) following their series win over Bangladesh last month. Bangladesh, who managed a draw in Galle during that series, are in fifth with 4 points (16.67% PCT).
New Zealand, Pakistan, and South Africa are yet to open their campaigns in this WTC cycle, but with the table starting to take shape, the race for the 2025 final is already heating up.
Why Zimbabwe Vs South Africa Tets Series Is Not In WTC Cycle?
South Africa, the reigning champions of the ICC World Test Championship (WTC), are currently facing Zimbabwe for a two-Test series as part of their 2025 tour. The series will be followed by a T20I tri-series. However, these Tests won’t count towards the ongoing ICC WTC 2025-27 cycle, as Zimbabwe is not among the nine participating nations in the championship.
The teams competing in the WTC 2025-27 include South Africa, Australia, India, England, Pakistan, Sri Lanka, Bangladesh, West Indies, and New Zealand.
Each side is scheduled to play six Test series over two years — three at home and three away — with the top two teams by win percentage qualifying for the final.
South Africa’s WTC title defense will begin later this year when they take on Pakistan. Over the course of the cycle, the Proteas will also face India, Australia, Bangladesh, England, and Sri Lanka. Earlier this month, they clinched the ICC Test mace after a dominant victory over Australia in the WTC 2023-25 final.
