The Colombian singer has a long history with the buzzy awards show, beginning with her first appearance in the early 2000s and continuing through her time on stage when Kanye interrupted Taylor to her prolific performances. In her decades-long career, she has won six VMAs trophies.
Take a look back at some of her most memorable VMAs moments and performances.
2000 and 2002
Shakira received her first VMA in 2000 for international viewer's choice (Latin America North) for "Ojos As," followed by another in 2002 for "Whenever, Wherever/Suerte." She performed on "Objection (Tango)" that year.
2005
Shakira received three nominations for "La Tortura": Best Female Video, viewer's choice, and Best Dance Video. Despite the fact that she returned home empty-handed, she commanded the stage in Miami that year. She made VMAs history once more when she performed "La Tortura" with Alejandro Sanz, the first-ever performance done entirely in Spanish.
2006
She wowed the audience once more. In 2006, she won best choreography in a video, one of seven awards presented to her megahit "Hips Don't Lie" that night.  She performed with Wyclef Jean on "Hips Don't Lie" in 2006.
2007
In 2007, she won her fourth VMA for most groundbreaking collaboration for "Beautiful Liar," her duet with Beyoncé.
2009
The singer's sparkly mini was the ideal outfit for the show's return to New York City in 2009. Shakira was on stage for Kanye West's unforgettable "Imma let you finish" moment while presenting the best female video to Taylor Swift alongside Taylor Lautner.
2023
The beautiful Colombian firebrand looked around two decades younger than her 46 years as she hopped through a 10-minute mix of classics delivered in Spanish and English, her first live appearance at the VMAs since 2006. Shakira, the recipient of this year's Michael Jackson Video Vanguard Award, flung her mane and howled through "She Wolf" and punched at the camera as she entered a drum circle for "Objection," which included some tantalizing caressing of her mic stand as well as Shakira strapping on an electric guitar to rip out a few rock chords.
