Former “American Idol” contestant and Ohio pastor Caleb Flynn has been sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole for murdering his wife, Ashley Flynn.

Flynn, 40, was sentenced on Monday, days after a jury found him guilty on all nine charges stemming from Ashley’s death. The charges included aggravated murder, murder, felonious assault and tampering with evidence. The jury found that he killed his wife and staged the scene to make it appear that an intruder had broken into their home.

Flynn continued to maintain his innocence during the sentencing hearing, while apologising to Ashley’s family and their two daughters for the consequences of his actions. He told the court that, despite admitting he had lied about other matters, he was not lying when he said he did not kill his wife.

Prosecutors Say Flynn Staged Home Invasion

The case dates to February 16, when Flynn called 911 and reported that an unknown intruder had entered the family’s home in Tipp City, north of Dayton, Ohio, and shot Ashley, a 37-year-old schoolteacher and volleyball coach.

Prosecutors argued that Flynn had instead killed his wife while she was asleep and then manipulated the crime scene to make it look like a burglary had taken place. Investigators arrested him three days later.

The prosecution also presented evidence of Flynn’s affair with Alleigha Botner, a former intern at his church. Botner testified that the relationship lasted for more than a year and that Flynn had discussed his marriage and his desire for Ashley to die. Prosecutors argued that the affair provided a motive for the killing.

Flynn did not testify during the trial, and the defence did not call any witnesses. The jury deliberated for about two hours before finding him guilty of all nine charges on September 29.

Flynn’s Daughters Speak At Sentencing

The sentencing hearing brought the focus back to Ashley’s family. Flynn’s two daughters, who were at home when their mother was killed, addressed their father through statements read in court by relatives.

The girls asked Flynn why he had killed their mother and urged him to acknowledge responsibility. Their statements described Ashley as a devoted mother and their closest friend, while relatives told the court about the lasting impact of her death on the children and wider family.

Judge Jeannine Pratt imposed the maximum sentence of life without parole for the murder. Flynn also received additional prison terms for tampering with evidence and firearm enhancements, which are to be served consecutively.

Flynn had briefly appeared on “American Idol” in 2013, where he spoke about his Christian faith and his wife’s support for his musical ambitions. He later worked as a pastor and worship leader.

Ashley’s family supported the life sentence while saying they had forgiven Flynn. Flynn, meanwhile, left the hearing facing the rest of his life behind bars while continuing to deny that he killed his wife.
