It has been 24 years since Sooraj Barjatya’s ‘Hum Saath-Saath Hain’ hit the theatres. The film has grown to become a pop culture moment. If you are active on social media, chances are that you must have seen multiple memes and jokes that are drawn from its scenes. For example, that one scene where Anand Babu does not get a laddoo.

In case you don’t remember the scene, here’s a refresher. The men from the movie are sitting around a carom board and someone passes them a box of sweets. While everyone gets their share, Anand misses it, and he covers it with a smile. Recently, the actor who played Anand in ‘Hum Saath Saath Hain’ talked about this scene and shared a hilarious story that happened while they were shooting.

Speaking to Brut India, Mahesh Thakur reveals that it was not planned for him to miss the laddoo. He revealed how the director had instructed an actor to offer sweets to everyone. He said, “Everybody takes laddoo from the mithai ka dabba and he was basically supposed to offer everybody. But the actor was positioned not in arm’s reach. Or even if he was, he was focusing on his dialogues. So by the time the dabba comes to me, I missed it. And then he comes close to me. Again I go for it and again, I missed it.”

The actor revealed that he played along with it because opting for a retake would get expensive. Back in those days, films were not shot digitally. It was shot on a film camera. He hilariously added, “I managed it with expressions and, you know, I played along. What are you supposed to do if you don’t get a laddoo?” He revealed how was aware of memes that were floating around on social media regarding that scene.

‘Hum Saath-Saath Hain’ went on to become one of the biggest blockbusters of the decade.
