Most-Anticipated South Films Of 2024: From Mahesh Babu's 'Guntur Kaaram', Dhanush's 'Captain Miller' to Mammootty starrer 'Bazooka' and Rishab Shetty's 'Kantara' prequel, here's the list of the South films releasing this year.

South films releasing in 2024

In the past few years, South Indian cinema has become more than just 'regional cinema'. Films like 'Baahubali', 'RRR', 'Pushpa', 'Kantara' and 'KGF:2' among others have cemented the position of South cinema not only in India but also globally. Like the previous years, the year 2024 will also be one of the most important years for South films in terms of quality content and box-office numbers. It has an interesting line-up of movies in all four industries- Telugu, Tamil, Malayalam and Kannada.

Here is a list of some of the most-anticipated South films of 2024.

Telugu

'Guntur Kaaram'

Mahesh Babu starrer 'Guntur Kaaram' is one of the most-awaited movies of 2024. Directed by Trivikram Srinivas, the film is releasing in theatres on January 13. It will see Mahesh on the screen after two years. His last was the 2022 film 'Sarkaru Vaari Paata'. 'Guntur Kaaram' drama also stars Sreeleela as the female lead.

'Kalki 2898 AD'

One of the magnum opuses of 2024, 'Kalki 2898 AD' starring Prabhas as the lead is directed by Nag Ashwin. It also stars Amitabh Bachchan, Kamal Haasan and Deepika Padukone. The first look was launched at San Diego’s Comic Com festival. The release date is yet to be announced. Earlier, it was slated to release in January 2024.

'Pushpa – The Rule'

'Pushpa-The Rule' is a sequel to the pan-ndia blockbuster 'Pushpa The Rise'. Allu Arjun will reprise his role in the actioner. Directed by Sukumar, the first part of the film won several awards, including National awards. It also stars Rashmika Mandanna and Fahadh Faasil in pivotal roles. It is said to be releasing in August 2024.

'Game Changer'

One of the most-talked-about movies is Ram Charan's 'Game Changer' directed by Shankar. It also has Kiara Advani. The movie is currently under production and the final release date is yet to be announced.

'Family Star'

Vijay Deverakonda will be seen in 'Family Star'. The teaser showed Vijay in dual roles. Directed by Parasuram Petla, the movie also has Mrunal Thakur who plays Vijay’s wife. It will release in 2024.

'Goodachari 2'

After the 2018 blockbuster 'Goodachari', actor Adivi Sesh returns as Agent 116 in this sequel. 'G2' is helmed by debut director Vinay Kumar, and also stars Banita Sandhu as the leading lady.

'Devara Part 1'

Jr NTR's 'Devara' will release in two parts. The posters of Part 1 have been unveiled already. It marks Janhvi Kapoor's debut in the Telugu film industry. Directed by Kortala Siva, the first part of the movie will release on April 5. It also has Saif Ali Khan.

Tamil

'Ayalaan'

'Ayalaan' starring Sivakarthikeyan is an upcoming Tamil movie scheduled to be released on January 12, 2024. The science fiction is directed by R. Ravikumar.

'The Greatest of All Time'

Thalapathy Vijay's 'The Greatest of All Time's first look poster was dropped recently. Vijay will be seen in a dual role. Vijay's upcoming film with Venkat Prabhu, which is the actor's 68th film is slated for release in the summer of 2024.

'Vidaa Muyarchi'

This Ajith starrer is an upcoming Indian Tamil-language action thriller. It is written and directed by Magizh Thirumeni and is reportedly releasing in May 2024.

'Viduthalai Part 2'

The second part of Vetrimaaran’s blockbuster 'Viduthalai' stars Vijay Sethupathi. Reportedly, the makers are planning to release it during Republic Day weekend on January 26.

'Kanguva'

'Kanguva' is the highly-anticipated film of actor Suriya. It is directed by Siruthai Siva. Originally scheduled for the summer of 2024, now reports suggest that the makers have decided to postpone the film's release date to the second half of 2024. It also stars Bobby Deol and Disha Patani.

'Thangalaan'

Chiyaan Vikram starrer is set in Kolar Gold Mines during the pre-independence era. Helmed by Pa Ranjith, it has been reportedly pushed to hit the screens in summer, February 2024. Earlier, it was set to release in January.

'Captain Miller'

Dhanush's 'Captain Miller, directed by Arun Matheshwaran, is set in the pre-independence era. The actor plays the role of a rebel. The trailer was unveiled recently and it is scheduled for a theatrical release on January 12, 2024.

'Indian 2'

Kamal Haasan's film which is directed by Shankar, is also a highly-anticipated flick. The release date has been postponed several Kamal and Shankar have teamed up after a gap of 25 years. It was reported that the film would released on April 12, 2024

'Vettaiyan'

Rajinikanth and TJ Gnanavel Raja’s film is special for various reasons. One is it has Amitabh Bachchan and the film will be a reunion for Thalaivar and Big B. It also stars Fahadh Faasil and Rana Daggubati. Reportedly, the makers are keen to release the multi-starrer during the Summer of 2024, maybe in April.

Kannada

'UI'

Upendra will star as the lead in 'UI'. He will direct the film. The movie also features Reeshma Nanaiah, Nidhi Subbaiah, Murli Sharma and P Ravishankar.

'Richard Anthony'

Rakshit Shetty will be seen in 'Richard Anthony'. The film is reportedly based on Rakshit’s character from 'Ulidavre Kandante'. The film is produced by 'KGF' and 'Salaar' makers Hombale Films.

'Kantara Prequel'

The prequel of 'Kantara' was announced last year and it created a huge anticipation among the audience. 'Kantara' was a huge success and it made Rishab Shetty the pan-India star. The film is expected to be released in 2024. Written and directed by Rishab, the movie is produced by Vijay Kiragandur of Hombale Films.

'Yuva'

'Yuva' starring Yuva Rajkumar will arrive in theatres on March 28, 2024. Yuva is directed by Santosh Ananddram and also stars Saptami Gowda. Yuva is the nephew of Sandalwood stars Shivarajkumar and Puneeth Rajkumar.

'Bagheera'

'Bagheera' starring Srii Murali and 'SSE' fame Rukmini Vasanth is written by Prashanth Neel and directed by Dr Suri. The teaser was released in December and it has garnered more than seven million views on YouTube. It is slated for a mid-2024 release.

Malayalam

'Malaikottai Vaaliban'

This Malayalam film marks the first collaboration between Mohanlal and filmmaker Lijo Jose Pellissery. It is releasing on screens on January 25.

'Barroz'

'Barroz' is an epic fantasy and it will have Malayalam superstar Mohanlal taking the director’s seat for the first time. Written by Jijo Punnoose, the film is about a mythical figure named Barroz, who has been guarding Vasco da Gama’s treasure for over 400 years and will hand over the treasure only to the true successors of Gama. The film is slated to hit the cinemas on March 28.

'Bramayugam'

Expectations are really high for this Mammootty starrer for which he has collaborated with 'Bhoothakaalam' director Rahul Sadasivan, The first look of the actor has already hype and buzz. It is a horror flick, set in the dark ages of Kerala. Mammootty will be seen in a never-seen-before avatar. Apart from Malayalam language, the movie will also be released in Tamil, Telugu, Kannada and Hindi languages. Reports state that it will hit screens in February.

'Turbo'

'Turbo' is yet another film of Mammootty. The first-look poster of Vysakh’s 'Turbo' is captivating. The action drama also features Telugu actor Sunil and Kannada actor-filmmaker Raj B Shetty. The movie is expected to be released in January.

'Bazooka'

Mammootty's 'Bazooka' which is a thriller, is directed by debutant Deeno Dennis. The film’s first-look poster has made us curious and we can't wait to watch it on screen. The film is set to release on February 16, 2024.

'Aadujeevitham'

Prithviraj Sukumaran’s 'Aadujeevitham' (The Goat Life) is directed by Blessy. It is an adaptation of the acclaimed novel of the same name written by Benyamin. It is releasing worldwide on April 10.

'Ajayante Randam Moshanam'

'Ajayante Randam Moshanam' is a fantasy period drama set in three distinct historical periods. The movie is directed by Jithin Lal and will feature Tovino Thomas and Krithi Shetty as leads. Tovino plays three characters. According to reports, the movie is expected to be released in May.

'Varshangalkku Shesham'

Vineeth Sreenivasan’s 'Varshangalkku Shesham' stars Pranav Mohanlal, Dhyan Sreenivasan, Aju Varghese, Kalyani Priyadarshan, Basil Joseph, Nivin Pauly and Vineeth himself. It is set for an April release.

'Kathanar – The Wild Sorcerer'

Directed by Rojin Thomas, this two-part period fantasy thriller chronicles the life of Kadamattathu Kathanar, a legendary Christian priest of the 9th century, known for his magical abilities. It stars Jayasurya and Anushka Shetty in the lead roles.

Other Malayalam films that are releasing this year are Fahadh Faasil starrer 'Aavesham', Basil Joseph tarrer 'Guruvayoor Ambalanadayil' and 'Nadikar Thilakam' among others.
