As a fragile ceasefire between US-Iran takes effect, the White House said Iran has provided assurances that it is allowing ships to pass through the crucial waterway. However, Tehran says it has closed the strait following Israel’s attacks on Lebanon.
Iranian President Seyed Abbas Araghchi said the United States must choose between pursuing a ceasefire or continuing the war through Israel. “The world is witnessing the massacres in Lebanon. The ball is in the U.S.’s court, and the world is watching whether it will act on its commitments,” he added.
The United States will be sending Vice President JD Vance, along with senior advisers Jared Kushner and Steve Witkoff, for talks with Iran in Pakistan. White House spokesperson Karoline Leavitt said the first round of negotiations would take place in Islamabad on Saturday morning local time.
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said any ceasefire with Iran would not extend to Hezbollah. “A ceasefire with Iran will not include Hezbollah. We are continuing to hit Hezbollah.”
The death toll in Lebanon has risen to at least 254, with 1,165 people reported injured in Israeli attacks across the country on Wednesday.
UN High Commissioner for Human Rights Volker Türk condemned Israeli strikes across Lebanon on Wednesday.
The White House has said the United States continues to reject any uranium enrichment within Iran, reiterating that Trump did not agree to what it described as a "wish list" submitted by Tehran.
