The conflict involving the US, Israel and Iran saw a sudden pause on April 7 when President Trump announced a two-week suspension of US strikes. The move came after he warned of major attacks on Iranian infrastructure if the Strait of Hormuz was not reopened by his 8pm ET deadline. Trump said the suspension was conditional on Iran allowing the complete, immediate and safe reopening of the strait, following talks with Pakistani leaders who proposed the extension. Iran’s foreign minister stated that safe passage would be possible for two weeks through coordination with its armed forces, provided attacks stop. Israel has also agreed to halt its strikes on Iran as part of the arrangement. Negotiations between the sides are expected to begin Friday in Islamabad. Both the US and Iran described the step as a short-term ceasefire.

US Israel Iran War LIVE Updates: Iran-US ceasefire creates ‘off ramps’ from conflict, says analyst

Ross Harrison, a senior fellow at the Middle East Institute in Washington DC, said it remains unclear whether the two-week truce is a tactical pause or a real diplomatic opening, but noted it has created “off ramps” from the conflict.

He said the situation just hours earlier had been at a “very, very dangerous inflection point”, with the US threatening drastic measures and Iran holding its position.

Harrison said the US showed it could escalate vertically by raising stakes and threatening military action, while Iran still had options to escalate horizontally by widening the conflict to the Strait of Hormuz and Gulf Arab states.

US Israel Iran War LIVE Updates: Ansari ‘momentarily relieved’ by truce, says Trump unfit for office

Iranian-American congresswoman Yassamin Ansari said she is “momentarily relieved” by the ceasefire but described Donald Trump as “dangerous and unfit” for office.

She said the two-week pause in attacks brings relief to 90 million Iranians who “just spent the worst 24 hours of their lives” fearing a possible nuclear catastrophe, stressing that civilians, not the regime, would have been affected.

Ansari said the agreement “doesn’t change anything” about Trump’s fitness for office, accusing him of threatening genocide and war crimes.

She cited his remarks that “a whole civilization will die” and that Iran could be taken “back to the stone ages” as evidence he is “mentally unstable, unhinged, and unfit for office or any position of authority”.

As previously reported, dozens of Democratic members of Congress have called for invoking the 25th Amendment to remove Trump, questioning his ability to carry out presidential duties.

US Israel Iran War LIVE Updates: Oil prices have dropped after the announcement of the ceasefire between Iran and the US

Markets have rallied and oil prices have come down, Alex Holmes of the Economist Intelligence Unit told Al Jazeera. But he said too much certainty cannot be placed on whether the announced ceasefire will hold.

“So key to watch will be any signs coming from the Israelis, the Iranians and other parties over whether this ceasefire will hold,” Holmes said.

“There’s going to be a big gap to bridge in negotiations so the markets are still in wait-and-see mode,” he said.

“And even though they have moved, obviously prices of oil are still a lot higher than they were in late February,” he said.
