Andy Cowell removed as team principal/CEO, now chief strategy officer
Newey's designs delivered 12 drivers’ and 13 constructors’ championship titles
Aston Martin currently sit eighth in F1 2025 standings, with Alonso 13th and Stroll 16th
Aston Martin have confirmed Adrian Newey will become their new team principal in 2026.
Newey joined Aston Martin as their managing technical partner in a big move from Red Bull, for whom his car designs played a key role in the team's dominance of Formula One in recent years.
He has won 12 drivers' and 13 constructors' championships across spells with Williams, McLaren and Red Bull.
Newey will replace Andy Cowell, who has been removed from his position as team principal and chief executive officer and will take up a role as Aston Martin's chief strategy officer.
Aston Martin owner Lawrence Stroll said: "Andy Cowell has been a great leader this year. He's focused on building a world-class team and getting them to work well together, as well as fostering a culture that puts the race car back at the heart of what we do.
"This leadership change is a mutual decision we have reached in the interest of the team. We all look forward to continuing working with him in his new capacity."
Newey added: "Over the last nine months, I have seen great individual talent within our team.
"I'm looking forward to taking on this additional role as we put ourselves in the best possible position to compete in 2026, where we will face an entirely new position with Aston Martin now a works team, combined with the considerable challenge faced by the new regulations."
It has been a frustrating season for Aston Martin. They sit eighth in the team standings with just 72 points, with their drivers having failed to claim a race win or podium finish.
Fernando Alonso sits 13th in the driver standings, with Lance Stroll in 16th, ahead of the Qatar Grand Prix this weekend.
