Inter Milan, making a fresh start under head coach Cristian Chivu after their defeat in the UEFA Champions League final, had a rough start to their Club World Cup campaign. They were held to a 1-1 draw by Mexican side CF Monterrey, with Lautaro Martinez cancelling Sergio Ramos’ opener.
Martinez was on target again, scoring a late equaliser as the Italian Serie A giants managed to scrape past Urawa Red Diamonds by a 2-1 margin, courtesy of a stoppage-time winner from Valentin Carboni.
River Plate, meanwhile, started their Club World Cup campaign with a 3-1 win over Urawa Reds. The Argentine side followed it up by grinding out a 0-0 draw with Monterrey. Despite having 18 shots, River failed to break down the stubborn Monterrey defence.
Despite their poor form of late, Inter remain slight favourites, having won 80% of their Club World Cup matches so far. Both sides have scored more than two goals in four of their last seven games across all competitions, so a free-scoring game will be on the cards, with a knockout stage berth on the line.
