Five members of a debt-ridden family were found dead at their house in Karnataka’s Tumakuru district Sunday evening.

The deceased were identified as Garib Saab, 42, his wife Sumayya, 35, and their children Hazira, 14, Subhan, 10, and Muneer, 8, PTI reported.

The police suspected that the husband and wife might have killed their children first and later ended their lives in a suicide pact.

A police officer said Saab had recorded a video where he mentioned he was being harassed by people who gave him loans at exorbitant interest. He had also left a two-page purported suicide note, the police said.

Tumakuru Superintendent of Police Ashok V V visited the spot and told the media that Saab was a native of Lakkanahalli of the Sira taluk and had shifted to Tumakuru town for the children’s education. The police said Saab used to run a kebab shop in Tumakuru town and had taken a loan of Rs 1.5 lakh but could not repay the money.

A police officer said Saab, in the video shared with relatives, said his neighbours and four others were responsible for the deaths.

On Monday, Karnataka Home Minister G Parameshwara visited the hospital where the bodies were kept in the mortuary. He also met the relatives of the deceased and assured action.
