Maharashtra's capital and Indian financial hub of Mumbai is named after the Hindu deity Mumba Devi, considered to be the city's patron deity. The British-era name Bombay was changed in 1995 to Mumbai to give the city an Indian name and ditch colonialism by the then Shiv Sena-Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) government.
