Sneha Debnath, a 19-year-old Delhi University student from Sabroom in South Tripura district, has been missing since July 7 in the national capital.
As per reports, her last whereabouts were at the Signature Bridge, and the lack of functioning CCTVs at the location has hindered the investigation.
Tripura’s Chief Minister Manik Saha has given orders to take necessary and immediate actions in the matter. The Chief Minister’s Office on X stated “The report of Miss Sneha Debnath, a resident of Sabroom, who has reportedly gone missing in New Delhi, has come to the notice of the Chief Minister's Office. Following this, necessary instructions have been promptly issued to the police to take immediate and appropriate action.”
A search operation is underway by Delhi Police and National Disaster Response Force (NDRF), ANI reported.
Debnath is a student at Atma Ram Sanatan Dharma college, and as per her family, she was to accompany her friend to Delhi’s Sarai Rohilla Railway Station and was last heard from at 5:56 AM.
However, by 8:45 AM, her phone was switched off. Her friend also stated that she had not met Debnath as planned.
As per her sister Bipasha Debnath’s account, she contacted the driver, Subhe Chandra, who informed them that Sneha had gotten off at Signature Bridge. “However, after we spoke to people at and around the bridge, they were not aware of her ever being there,” the FIR stated, The Patriot reported.
According to the police, the CCTVs on the bridge are non-functional, which has made the search operation difficult as the authorities now have to rely solely on witness accounts.
“These are under maintenance, but none of them are functional,” a police officer said. “We have sent requests for servicing, but the vendors have not arrived yet,” The Patriot quoted.
The NDRF and Delhi’s Crime Branch led a seven-kilometer radius search operation on July 9, but found no concrete leads. Authorities have also issued a public appeal for any information helpful in the case.
