After a legendary run spanning several decades, Charles Martinet, the iconic voice behind Nintendo's beloved character Mario, is taking a step back. Nintendo of America officially confirmed that Martinet will be assuming the mantle of "Mario Ambassador". He will embark on a global journey to promote the cherished plumber, engage with fans, and bring the magic of Nintendo characters to life.

In a statement released on Monday, Nintendo expressed gratitude for Martinet's unparalleled contributions in giving voice to Mario since the 1990s. The gaming giant acknowledged the privilege of collaborating with Martinet, who has breathed life into one of the most recognizable characters in gaming history.

Martinet's versatility extended beyond Mario, as he also lent his voice to other beloved characters like Luigi, Wario, and Waluigi across various video game titles. Although he wasn't the voice of Mario in the recent cinematic adaptation, he made a notable appearance as Mario's father.

Interestingly, during a Q&A session at a Canadian gaming and comics expo a couple of years ago, Martinet's commitment to his iconic role was evident. In response to a fan's question, he emphatically stated, "I want to voice Mario until I drop dead,". He added a note of humility, acknowledging that if a time comes when he no longer feels capable of fulfilling the role, he would suggest that Nintendo consider finding a suitable replacement.

Nintendo has not disclosed the reason behind Martinet's decision to step down, nor have they revealed who might take over the mantle as the voice of Mario. The news marks a significant transition for both the actor and the character that has captured the hearts of gamers worldwide.

As Charles Martinet embarks on his new role as a "Mario Ambassador," fans can anticipate the continuation of Mario's legacy and the perpetuation of the endearing connection between the character and his devoted audience.
