Actor Freida Pinto is all set to lead Netflix's upcoming series Unaccustomed Earth, an adaptation of Jhumpa Lahiri's short story collection of the same name.
The project, which was announced by the streaming giant in April, will feature eight episodes, reported Variety. Pinto will play the role of Parul Chaudhury.
The official logline of Unaccustomed Earth describes it as an "epic, soapy, and culturally vibrant drama about a tight-knit Indian American community navigating love, desire, and belonging".
"Rich with nuance, passion, and unforgettable characters, Unaccustomed Earth invites you into the elite and insular Indian-American community of Cambridge, MA. When a star-crossed romance between a devoted wife and her long lost love comes to light, a scandalous affair is born and new battle lines are drawn in this intensely interconnected immigrant community," the official logline read further.
John Wells (August: Osage County and Burnt) and Madhuri Shekar will co-write the adaptation. Both will also executive produce, with Shekar serving as the showrunner. It will be directed by The Lunchbox-fame Ritesh Batra, who will also executive produce the first and second episodes.
Nisha Ganatra, who had originally optioned the book and developed the series, will also executive produce the Netflix show.
Lahiri will also executive produce, alongside Erica Saleh, Erin Jontow of JWP, and Celia Costas.
For the unversed, Lahiri's 2003 novel The Namesake was adapted into a film by Mira Nair in 2006, which starred Irrfan Khan, Tabu and Kal Penn, in key roles.
Unaccustomed Earth will be produced by Warner Bros Television.
Coming back to Pinto, she shot to fame with 2008 Oscar-winning film Slumdog Millionaire, which was her feature debut. Rise of the Planet of the Apes, Knight of Cups, Hillbilly Elegy, and Mr. Malcolm’s List, among others are some of her other projects. She is also known for her roles in television shows including Guerilla, Surface, and The Path.
