In an out-of-competition dope test conducted recently, shot putter Karanveer Singh suffered a setback after returning positive resulting in his removal from the Indian team for the Asian Championships next week.

Karanveer was one of the 54 players named in the Indian squad for the continental championships to take place from July 12 to July 16. The team is set to leave for Thailand on Saturday night.

Athletics Federation of India (AFI) president Adille Sumariwalla confirmed the report of Karanveer failing the dope test.

It is however not known when the dope test was conducted or which banned substance was detected in the shot putter.

Earlier, reports were doing the rounds that Karanveer could be left out of the Indian contingent leaving for Thailand from New Delhi and Bengaluru.

The 25-year-old athlete had recently won a bronze in the Federation Cup with a throw of 19.05m and also finished second behind compatriot Tajinderpal Singh Toor in the National Inter-State Championships in June with a throw of 19.78m. He currently ranks sixth among Asian shot putters in the season.

He has a personal best score of 20.10m, which he registered during the National Open Championships last year.

With Karanveer's removal, Toor is the only Indian participant in the men's event of the Asian Championships.
