The return of the Durand Cup in Manipur has ignited widespread excitement, and the state government has already declared a half-holiday on the matchday "to enable employees and others to watch" the match.
The TRAU FC vs NEROCA FC clash, set in the heart of the state and aptly dubbed a 'derby', has all the makings of a classic. The two local giants have won more than 20 major trophies between them, and this latest face-off will add a new dimension to the rivalry, for both clubs and the local populace, considering the state of affairs in this small, hilly northeastern state.
In May 2023, Manipur descended into chaos, and more than two years on, the state still burns. As news of clashes between the Meitei and Kuki communities hit national and international headlines, sports and cultural escapades continue to provide a false sense of normalcy.
TRAU, one of the most dominant forces in state football, have occasionally forayed into the national scene but with limited success. The same can be said about NEROCA, the younger of the two and now arguably the best state has to offer.
In 2016, NEROCA effectively became the first team from the northeast to reach the final of the Durand Cup. They lost to Army Green on penalties following a goalless extra-time at Delhi's Ambedkar Stadium. In their most recent meeting, NEROCA beat TRAU 2-1 in an I-League 2 clash earlier this year.
Both clubs were relegated from the I-League two seasons ago. Beset by a lack of funds and exposure, they remain in the lower tier of the Indian football set-up. But today, they will have their day in the sun.
