South Africa batter Rassie van der Dussen has announced his retirement from international cricket with immediate effect, bringing an end to a consistent and impactful career spanning over seven years.

The 37-year-old will continue to play domestic cricket for the Lions and has also expressed his desire to contribute to the game by mentoring young cricketers in South Africa.

“It is with a proud heart and a profound sense of gratitude that I announce my retirement from International Cricket,” van der Dussen said in a statement.

“To wear the Proteas jersey is a feat that demands a level of resilience and dedication that both tests, and rewards you in the most incredible way. To have played for my country has been the greatest honour of my life. This journey has been paved with years of sacrifice, but the privilege of representing South Africa was worth every moment,” he added.

Van der Dussen made his international debut in a T20I against Zimbabwe in 2018 before breaking into the ODI side in 2019, where he made an immediate impact with a composed 93 on debut against Pakistan.

He soon became a key figure in South Africa’s middle order, particularly in the 50-over format, where he scored 2657 runs in 71 matches at an impressive average of 50.13, including six centuries and 17 fifties.

A Reliable Performer Across Formats for South Africa

He also represented South Africa in 18 Tests, scoring 905 runs with six half-centuries, narrowly missing out on a maiden Test hundred with a highest score of 98.

Over the years, he was part of major ICC tournaments, including the 2019 and 2023 ODI World Cups and the 2021 T20 World Cup, with his 133 against New Zealand in the 2023 edition standing out as one of his finest knocks.

While van der Dussen found great success internationally, his stint in the Indian Premier League remained limited. He featured for Rajasthan Royals in the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2022, playing three matches and scoring 22 runs, with a highest score of 12*.

Despite not making a major impact in the tournament, his reputation in franchise cricket remained strong, with consistent performances in leagues like the Pakistan Super League (PSL).

Van der Dussen also had a brief stint as South Africa’s T20I captain, leading the side in a series against West Indies in 2024. Known for his composure and consistency, he leaves the international stage as one of the most reliable batters of his era for South Africa.
