On August 30, 2003, Anju, then 26, made athletics history for India at the Stade de France in Saint-Denis. The lanky long jumper from Kerala became the first Indian medallist at the World Athletics Championships as she bagged the bronze by clearing 6.70m. Two years later, she won gold at the World Athletics Final in Monte Carlo, but Paris remains a pioneering feat.

As a sprightly 18-year-old, she became the first Indian to win a track gold at an international athletics event. At the IAAF World Under-20 Championships she triumphed in the 400m race in Tampere, Finland, this July, surprising everyone with her sudden, late burst to finish in 51.46 sec. She was part of the gold-winning 4x400m women’s team at the 2018 Asian Games in Indonesia.
