The Hyderabad Metropolitan Development Authority (HMDA) has invited proposals for a feasibility study to assess the viability of an ‘overhead skyway cable car’ between the Qutb Shahi Tombs and Golconda Fort, which are two of the city’s iconic heritage landmarks.
According to the Request for Proposal (RFP) floated by the HMDA, the study will evaluate the technical, environmental, financial, and operational factors of the project, aimed at improving connectivity and visitor experience in the heritage regions.
The idea of a cable car was initially greenlit by the Telangana Tourism Department in 2021, but remained stalled due to implementation challenges. The latest move signals renewed administrative interest in unlocking the tourism potential of the region, which currently suffers from inadequate connectivity despite the short physical distance between the two monuments, as reported by The Hindu.
The RFP notes that an overhead cable car would ease movement and also offer an environmentally sustainable solution with minimal disruption to ground-level heritage and urban infrastructure.
The feasibility study, once completed, will help determine the project's long-term viability and inform decisions on its execution.
