Thousands of people across the United States are expected to participate in protests on Thursday, targeting what they call President Donald Trump's controversial policies, including mass deportations and cuts to Medicaid and other social safety nets.
According to AP, the "Good Trouble Lives On" national day of action, organized by a coalition of groups including the nonprofit Public Citizen, will honor the legacy of the late congressman and civil rights leader John Lewis.
Over 1,600 events are planned in cities and towns nationwide, with major demonstrations expected in Atlanta, St. Louis, Oakland, and Annapolis.
Organizers have called for the protests, which will be held at locations such as streets and courthouses, to remain peaceful. Lisa Gilbert, co-president of Public Citizen, expressed deep concern over what she described as "a rise of authoritarianism and lawlessness within our administration." quoted AP
Reportedly, the event in Chicago is being billed as the flagship protest, where demonstrators will rally downtown and hold a candlelight vigil for Lewis. Betty Magness of the League of Women Voters Chicago said the rally would also feature a lively atmosphere with a DJ.
These protests follow other recent demonstrations against Trump's second-term policies. Earlier this month, tensions flared during mass arrests at two Southern California marijuana farms, resulting in the death of one farmworker.
The administration's use of the National Guard to protect immigration agents in Los Angeles also sparked significant street protests on June 8.
