Have you succeeded in making a non- clichéd Bollywood film?

Is direction necessarily the next logical step after acting?
I don’t know but I just enjoy handling actors.

Was it similar to stage direction?
No. Given a choice, I prefer directing a play to a film.

Do you think an actor-director makes a better director?
Not necessarily.

How has Bollywood evolved over the years?
Not at all.

What real-life character would you like to play?
Probably Prince Charles.

What made you choose the cast you did?
They were the best actors available for the roles I had in mind.

Why Saroj Khan?
Her face was perfect for the character and it’s a brief role.

You are not a people’s person. Was it difficult manning the cast and crewof the film?
As Jimmy Connors said, I am not here to make friends but to win matches. It wasn’t difficult—you have to be considerate and firm.

What role do you see for yourself in the future?
That of a teacher.
