Most of us are aware that Saif Ali Khan was just 21 years old when he got married to actor Amrita Singh. However, you might still be unversed that it was only after they got married that he told his family members about it.
During the latest episode of ‘Koffee with Karan 8’, which saw Saif and his mother, veteran actor Sharmila Tagore, gracing the couch, the two talked about Saif’s secret marriage. Saif mentioned how his mother was ‘hurt’ and ‘started crying’ after he told her about his secret marriage as she wanted to be involved in these matters.

Sharmila further stated how she was in Mumbai when Saif came to meet her and tell her about his secret marriage.
“He said, ‘I have something to tell you’, and then he told me. I don’t know what I was doing, but I was quiet, and he said, ‘Amma, your colour is changing, you are looking different.’ I said, ‘Well okay, we will talk about it later, not now’. After he left, I rang Tiger and told him. There was also a long silence there. We left it at that and then I said, ‘I would like to meet her’,” she said.

Saif reacted to it and said that while Sharmila was ‘supportive when he did it’, however, she was hurt when she got to know about the marriage. Talking about her prior warning, Saif recalled, “She told me, ‘I believe you are living with someone and you are doing some things’. I said yes. And she said, ‘Just don’t get married’. And I said, ‘I got married yesterday’, and a big tear fell out of her eye and she started crying and I felt I really hurt her. And she said, ‘You really hurt me, why didn’t you tell me?’ That’s actually what happened,” he recalled.
The veteran actress also shared how she met Amrita the day after Saif and Amrita got married. She liked her but was still shocked.
When Karan asked Saif how he decided to marry at such a young age, the actor called it “kind of like running away from home in a sense.” For him, it was “a kind of security and a kind of an idea that this is safe and it feels great. And I thought I could make a home out of that.”
Sharmila, on a lighter note, called Saif and Amrita as “similar people” and said that they “looked very happy together.” However, they parted ways after 13 years and Saif added they now share a respectful relationship.

“Unfortunately, doing it at 20 is young, and things change, but it was great support, she was wonderful to me. She is the mother of two of my children. I have a good relationship with her and it’s all respectful now,” he said.
Saif and Amrita are doting parents to Sara Ali Khan and Ibrahim Ali Khan. The actor is now married to Kareena Kapoor and has two children with her – Taimur and Jeh.
