The 36-year-old was welcomed by thousands of fans who lined up in Belgrade's city hall during a celebration held for the members of the Serbian national basketball team and the tennis star himself.

Djokovic was shown on the big screen as he made a surprise apperance alongside the basketball players as thousands of Serbian fans gathered in the city hall to celebrate Serbia's national basketball team's silver medal at the FIBA World Cup.

Djokovic's US Open triumph was huge for Serbia and the fans showed their love for their hero. Fans showed their love and support for Djokovic and it was truly an emotional moment.

Djokovic addressed the crowd from the balcony and thanked the fans who welcomed him not before breaking down in tears. The new world number one was then consoled by Serbian basketball star Nikola Milutinov.

Earlier, Djokovic recorded his 24th Slam singles title on Sunday when he defeated Russian Daniil Medvedev 6-3, 7-6 (5), 6-3 in the U.S. Open final. All of Serbian's triumphs have come during the Open era.
