Spain captain Olga Carmona scored the game's only goal as her solo effort proved Spain were crowned World champions at The Stadium Australia in Sydney.

Despite England's late attacking efforts, Spain held their front. Spain had a penalty saved by English goalie Mary Earps.

Spain and England had met last year in the quarter-finals of the European Championship, with the Lionesses squeezing through 2-1 in extra time. Prior coming into the World Cup, Spain had won just one of their previous seven World Cup matches.

This is Spain's sixth win in Australia and New Zealand that saw them crowned world champions.
