The Delhi mayoral election will be held on January 24 after Delhi L-G VK Sexana gave his nod on Monday. Initially, the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) had proposed January 30 to be the date for conducting the mayoral polls.

The newly elected MCD councillors’ oath or affirmation, the election of the Mayor, Deputy Mayor and six members to the Standing Committee will take place on Tuesday, January 24.

The MCD House comprises 250 elected councillors and the AAP won a clear majority of the House on December 7 last year. The BJP's seven Lok Sabha MPs from Delhi and the AAP's three Rajya Sabha MPs and 14 MLAs nominated by the Delhi Assembly Speaker will also participate in the elections to the posts of mayor and deputy mayor.

The polls for the Mayoral post are conducted through a select ballot.

Initially, the poll was supposed to be conducted on January 6. However, the maiden meeting of the newly elected MCD House was adjourned without electing the mayor and the deputy mayor amid loud protests by AAP councillors over the first administering oath to the 10 aldermen. The MCD House meeting was adjourned for the day.
