Is the red-and-green flag of Mulayam Singh Yadav’s Samajwadi Party taking on saffron hues? Recently, his government put in an affidavit before the Supreme Court defending the CBI for closing the conspiracy charge against top BJP leaders in the Ayodhya case. The Babri demolition, stated the affidavit, was not the outcome of any conspiracy. When the Left and the Congress raised Cain, it led a chastened Mulayam to sack his main lawyer in the case and say "there was a mistake". He also seemed hurt: "How can I compromise with communalism?" Then also came a revised affidavit, which called the demolition "barbaric" and called attention to a "conspiracy by some organisations".
